Note: These requirements remain in effect only if the student is present at all times. Otherwise, he is responsible for the requirements applicable at the time of return. Minimum Requirements for Transferring Student Examination: Admission to the Master of Social Work program is based on the satisfaction of the academic qualifications required for all graduate students of the College of Health and Human Services, as well as an assessment of the candidate`s potential for advanced practice in the social work profession. Please note that the application process is very competitive, so you want to focus on more than the minimum requirements. For example, a candidate with two years of work experience and a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.25 would be considered a stronger candidate than a candidate with one year of work experience and a cumulative GPA of 2.75. The Master of Social Work is a rigorous program of study consisting of 60 semester units. The demands of academic study work and the pedagogically oriented fieldwork process are arduous and require a high degree of concentration and attention. The full-time model of the MSW program is designed to allow students to complete the program in two years.
Due to the intensity of the program and its various requirements, students enrolled in the program full-time (2 years) are not required to work in addition to their full-time enrolment in the Master of Work. Students in the two-year full-time program take all-day classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The three-year model of the program is intended to allow for greater flexibility. Students in the three-year program attend classes one evening per week from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and on Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. General Education (GE) Requirements Each California State University, Los Angeles, Undergraduate Social Work must complete 39 units in the lower division and nine (9) units in the upper division of general education courses. Visit the study planner on this website: www.calstatela.edu/registrar/major-specific-declaration-requirements. All students, including transfer students, are required to take three courses (9 semester credits) in an upper division course. Students are required to take one course in each of three discipline areas: science and quantitative reasoning, arts and humanities, and social sciences. (Students cannot count a course in their major as a high school-themed course.) If you have any questions about GE or other academic requirements, please contact the Rongxiang Xu College of HHS Advice Center at (323) 343-5500 or make an appointment online at www.calstatela.edu/hhs/ac To be considered for admission to the major, applicants must meet the minimum requirements listed below.
Applicants who meet these minimum criteria will be ranked for admission based on a heading that includes their cumulative GPA, PGD in prerequisite courses, TEAS scores, military status, Cal State LA local preference status, and healthcare employment or volunteer experience. The number of candidates that can be admitted is severely limited by the availability of places. Please contact Patricia A. Chin School of Nursing for more information.
