The Civil Legal Services Clinic (CLSC, formerly Legal Services Program) is the oldest clinic in the School of Law and has been providing legal aid to the citizens of Wyoming for over 20 years. Student articling students enrolled at the CLSC represent low-income and marginalized individuals in the state who would otherwise not be able to afford to be represented by a lawyer. The CLSC`s mission is to provide legal services in a wide range of general civil law matters. As a result, the number of student cases is diverse and touches on many areas of civil practice, including housing, consumer rights, education, veterans` service-related disability benefits, and other public benefits legislation. Under the supervision of the clinic director, student trainees interview and advise clients, investigate facts, develop strategies for case options, negotiate with opponents, write briefs and argue before the courts. In order to provide articling students with practical insight into the business realities of legal practice, they maintain records while managing time tracking and other organizational activities.
Depending on their needs, students may also work on special projects, including research and assistance to lawyers who testify on legislative matters. Finally, student articling students work closely with Wyoming`s legal community and develop important relationships that support students throughout their professional lives.
