Students apply legal bases for joint business transactions such as confidentiality agreements, articles of association, unanimous shareholder agreements, various commercial financing methods including secured transactions and equity financing. They also master the principles and rules governing the purchase and sale of commercial land and personal property, the purchase of a company either by the purchase of shares of a company or by the purchase of assets of a company. Students apply the principles of employment law with an emphasis on the analysis of legal risks and responsibilities. The course addresses important legal issues between employers and non-unionized workers. The course applies contractual principles to the employment relationship from the perspective of the employer and the employee in order to achieve fair labour relations. This course does not cover unionized workplaces. Students will be introduced to the law and practice of corporate finance in Canada. Topics include the legal nature of equity and debt, fundamental securities law, the structure of Canadian public markets, private equity fundraising, public company financing, private and public mergers and acquisitions, and the due diligence process. The processes, procedures, forms of agreements and standard terms of corporate finance law are discussed, with the aim of providing students with a basic understanding of the law relevant to the process of raising capital for business growth and development. The Doctor of Philosophy is a three-year research program that attracts aspiring lawyers who have already earned a postgraduate degree in law. Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of legal research, including the analysis of primary and secondary research materials. This course focuses on legal research and analysis tasks, including researching and citing jurisprudence, statutes, regulations, and legal treaties and monographs.
Students explore the role of the paralegal in Alberta, including the role of the paralegal in law firms and other legal contexts. Students learn how the profession is regulated by the rules of ethics and the code of conduct. Students study the organization and operation of the firm, learn practice management techniques and develop skills to manage the client relationship. Students will learn the fundamentals of real estate law and other legal rules regarding the ownership and use of real estate in Alberta. Different types of land ownership are being studied and Alberta`s land titling system is being examined in detail. Students will also gain an understanding of the fundamentals of mortgages and leases (commercial and private). Finally, issues of liability and restrictions on land use are addressed, as provided for in both legislation and common law. Students will be introduced to the Canadian legal system and substantive areas of law of particular interest to the economics student. Study topics include infringement, contract, ethics, agency, partnership, and business.
The student acquires a general knowledge of the fundamental principles of business law and is able to apply it to everyday business situations. Note: Students can only count on one of the LEGL 105 and LEGL 210. The Internationally Educated Lawyers Pathway is designed for internationally educated lawyers who wish to practise law in Canada. The program allows students to take courses required by the National Accreditation Committee. Students learn the general legal principles relating to the disposition of real estate. They deal with the right to draw up wills, to dispose of successions and special decisions (powers of attorney, personal instructions and dependent adults). A brief introduction to trust law is also included. The Juris Doctor is a three-year degree programme renowned for providing students with a solid foundation in law as well as a range of specialisation opportunities in specific areas of interest. A four-year Juris Doctor/Master of Business dual degree program is also offered with the Faculty of Business. By analyzing legal information, managing and preparing business and legal correspondence and legal documents, this course focuses on developing students` knowledge of legal software and developing the knowledge necessary for the effective use of commonly used legal software.
Students will be introduced to legal procedures used in the modern legal environment and learn how information is managed in the legal environment. This course explores the relationship between ethics and law, between legal rules and the ethical layering of law. Through reported court decisions, legal commentary, and current events, students will explore the diversity and breadth of ethics law. Students will be introduced to the basic principles of international law, the legal structure of the contemporary international business environment, Canadian international trade law and services, the fundamentals of common methods of international dispute resolution, and a selection of common international business transactions. In conjunction with the mandatory course LEGL 116, Legal Writing and Procedures, students` skills in legal analysis, organization and communication are developed using skills to draft laws and prepare documents required in a modern legal environment. Students are introduced to related legal information management procedures used in the legal framework. This course provides an overview of the technological tools commonly used in the field of legal services. Students will be introduced to various technological tools that increase efficiency and productivity. including project management, file/accounting, electronic evidence and evidence management, secure web-based and other tools.
Students will also learn about data management and protection, as well as skills resulting from OCR and metadata characteristics. It is strongly recommended to complete the LEGL 231 and LEGL 235 standards beforehand. The Master of Laws is a one-year research program that enables law students, lawyers, and academics from related disciplines to enhance their legal expertise and conduct advanced research.
